What's New with the BRB

January 15, 2004
Catching up...

Whew! I haven't updated this thing in a while. Okay, here's a quick synopsis:

The festival went okay. I wasn't especially pleased with our performance but we got some really good comments all the same. I never know what to make of that. Onstage, I got excessive feedback from my Ovation hollow-body electric.

We played at the Hospice benefit in the fall and that went reasonably well. Got some nice comments about that one, too. We had a pretty good time. I borrowed Steve's Strat and I didn't have a feedback problem. Ted was sick and Alf Brady was kind enough to agree to fill in. He even came out for a last-minute rehearsal. However, at the last minute, Ted said he was feeling well-enough to play and so he did. Welcome back, Ted.

We were booked to play the Skeena Blend Coffee House on the last Friday before Christmas. Guess what... there was not a huge turnout. ;-) In fact, except for the volunteers who were there to make the coffeehouse happen, there were only two people in the audience, and they'd been specifically invited by me. We played the set anyway and had a good time doing it. For a change, I played my Takamine accoustic guitar and we tried to make it a little more laid back. Many of the songs ended up rockin', though. That's just something that happens when we three get together.

Oh, yeah, we three. Ted almost couldn't make it again but, again at the last minute, he was able to do it. He was able to join us for practice the night before the gig. Heather and Laurette were unable to make it because of prior commitments. I missed what the girls bring to the sound and to the onstage presence but it was also kind of neat to be just we three again, like it was in the beginning. It looks like Orlando has set his musical sights elsewhere, at least for now.

The really big news for this site is that I've changed hosting companies -- again! On about January 8, hackers did some serious defacing at and it seems to have affect all or most of the sites hosted by them at the time, including One week later, everything was still down and I'd not heard a peep from the folks at Crappy. Well, I wish them well and I hope they make a success of their business but a week of down-time is simply too long. I've gone to I already have another site hosted there and, so far, the service and up-time have been great. I'd like to just stay put for a while now...

Still getting ready for KVMF 2003

We've been confirmed for KVMF 2003 for 5 p.m. on the River Stage, Saturday, July 26. We'll be ready and we'll be loud. We're raw, we're real and we rock. I'm not sure that we're fitting in very neatly with the typical festival sound. I think that's a good reason for them to keep us around. ;)

Move complete

I think everything is set up, now. I probably won't bother to update the BRB sites at or anymore. At, I can host my own audio files. I've got some set up now. You can download our 128kbps mp3s or stream low-fi RealAudio on our tunes page:

Moving to a new host

I just received my welcome email from and I'll be moving everything over to there this week. I get a lot more for my buck -- and for fewer bucks, too.

Getting ready for KVMF 2003

We've got some new songs which we're working on diligently while waiting to hear what our time slot will be at the KVMF this year. Gee, I hope they don't give us a crappy one.

KVMF 2002 and new MP3s available

We enjoyed performing at the 2002 Kispiox Valley Music Festival again this year. We played at 8:30 PM on Friday night -- a pretty good time slot.

The peformance was recorded and 4 MP3s from that are now online: live versions of "Nothin' to the Slasher" (another Campbell-inspired expression of outrage), Heartbreak Express, Farrah Fawcett Hair, and a Slash Gordon. You can stream or download these from or

Heather's Wedding

Yep, Heather is getting married this month and, fools that we are (or is it her?), we've agreed to play at the wedding. Hey, shouldn't we be getting ready for that? I suppose she thinks she doesn't have to do her share of singing that night just because she's going to be the bride. Young folks these days -- they're soft. If you don't know the date and location, then you're probably not invited. Don't yell at me. It's not my fault if you're not worthy.
Oh, yeah. I gave the web site a minor face lift today.

A few quick notes:

I'm told that our 4 PM Saturday start time at the Kispiox Valley Music Festival on the River Stage immediately precedes the headliners. That's supposed to be a good spot for exposure. :-)
Also, starting in August, we will have possession of the music society's portable digital recording studio for two months. Our objective? A BRB CD!

New songs on our page

In the last few days, I've added two more songs to the BRB page at Shopping Blues and 'Til I Fell In Love With You. Like the rest of our songs there, these were recorded live at the 2000 Kispiox Valley Music Festival. Check them out on our site at

Festival Applications In!

We're confirmed for the coffee house wrap-up concert, we have verbal assurance that we'll be at KVMF and we're waiting for news about our Midsummer application. Stay tuned!

Benfit Dance

We're playing at a dance on Friday, February 2, 2001 at the Lions Hall in New Hazelton. Doors open at 9 PM, admission is $10. This is a benefit dance for a local family that has recently encountered serious health-related trouble. Questions? Barb Janze is the organizer.

New Band Members Confirmed

Laurette Lapalme and Heather Harris are now part of the band. Cool! They're both strong singers and we're looking forward to working on our new richer sound.

BRB New Year's Eve 2000

Woo hoo! We had a great time. The coolest thing happened after I broke a string at the end of a song. I asked Orlando to cover for a bit while a fixed it and he started doing this funky groove on the keyboard, just making something up on the spot. Ted and Steve jumped in and it sounded very cool. The crowd thought so, too. They hit the floor and started dancing again. Eventually, I got my string fixed and I was able to join the jam. What a blast!

The Yawning Dogs played the first half (and did a great job, of course), until almost midnight, then we did the countdown thing and played until about quarter to four. We were exhausted but it was terrific fun.

Getting ready for BRB New Year's Eve 2000

We'll be making plenty of noise and making people dance at the Kispiox Valley Community Association's New Year's Eve 2000 bash.

Two of the fine ladies from Girasol, Laurette Lapalme and Heather Harris, will join us for some sweet harmonies. Will they become regular members of the BRB? No one knows for sure yet!

Our good friends, the Yawning Dogs, will also be playing at the dance so it should be a fun-packed night!
